  1. "Night Shift " starring Micheal Keaton, Henry Winkler, and Shelly Long. A fast, funny and very 80's movie, with some great lines.
  2. "Sixteen Candles " starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. John Hughes' first best attempt at a teen comedy. Moving, and very funny.
  3. "Breakfast Club " anyone see a trend here? Again, very funny, and very insightful.
  4. "It Happened One Night " starring Claudette Colbert and shit the guy that played Rhett Butler in gone with the wind..whatthefucks his name? Anyway, a great movie.
  5. "Slingblade " starring Billy Bob Thornton....an Oscar nod this year for best original screenplay...should've won for best actor...ah well.
  6. "Resevoir Dogs " starring Harvey Kietel and Steve Buscemi...awesome flick, visceral and powerful, the "cop torture" scene ranks up there among the best "hardest to not watch" scenes of all time.
  7. "The Outlaw Josey Wales " starring Clint Eastwood, my favorite western of all time. Probably the grittiest and most powerful movie of the genre I've ever seen.
  8. "Jaws " starring Roy Schiedner, Richard Dreyfuss, and the late great Robert Shaw, it managed to create a genre all it's own, spawning such films as "Orca" "Alien" "Jurassic Park" and most recently "Ananconda"....I could be flipping through the 57 channels on my tv, see it and watch it all the way through no matter where I came into the movie...it's that good.
  9. "Goodfellas " starring Deniro, Pesci, and Liotta, redefining "mobster" movies. Yes, "The Godfather" is a classic...but it is long and longwinded. "Goodfellas" breaks the genre down to it's basic premise and throws that premise in your face.
  10. "The Terminator " starring AHNOLD...an original idea...hard to find in the "Mine The 60's, 50's and 40's for ideas that worked before" era that we live in now...was a relatively low budget well executed film that spawned what is NOW known as the "action movie".

ahhhh. always making lists and checkin em twice for the ewon crowd. let's see... movies, movies... hmmm

12 angry men... a classic... but if you're not a fan of talk or having to think, i can't really recommend it (thinking about a story that was told to me by a friend..they'd just been to see "usual suspects," he says "wow, best movie i ever seen, the subtleties of everything that happened throughout that whole movie, i gotta see it again so i can trace it all, it was so great, it really makes you pay attention. what'd you think?" girlfriend tosses hair aside and whines, "i didn't like it -- they talked too much." see what i'm sayin?

"welcome to the dollhouse." there is a little bit of weinerdog in us all, methinks.

"what about bob." i just saw it for the first time over the weekend and it's fuckin hilarious, though the panic-disorder in me might have been the key to appreciation, then again my friend beaver laughed just as much as i, and he is panic-free.

"trees lounge." another movie i saw while in the land of cleve... it's the first movie that boyfriend and i have ever agreed was good. it was so fucking funny... in some ways, along the screw-up can't get it together vein of muriel's wedding, but better-written and better-acted and i love steve buscemi i think he's great.

"the times and life of harvey milk," a documentary about the first openly-gay san francisco politician. it's extremely welld-done and if you have a pulse it'll make you very angry.

"vendetta." wrongly-accused of murder, a wholesome blonde girl gets sent to prison, refutes the passes of the hooliganish ringleading dyke, gets killed. her stunt-woman sister gets herself thrown in jail to avenge her sister's death. can't go wrong with a chicks in prison flick! definitely a movie to be watched w/ a bowl of popcorn and a big gulp from your local 7-11.

"labyrinth." poorly-acted, some of the worst lines in movie history ("you're a worm, aren't you?") and some of the best ("acchh, it's so stimulating being your hat."), but it's bowie in stretch pants playing goblin-king for a day. i love it.

"hair." the play is much better, but i still love the movie... bring a hanky.

"winnie the pooh." seriously, you want me to explain why?

"kiss meets the phantom of the park." mad scientist working under a carnival kidnaps kiss and replaces them with evil android clones that work up the crowd into chanting "rip and destroy! rip and destroy!" best part is the campiness of it's circa 1970s celluloid self.

"lolita." shelley winters is classic in this movie. and in the times before now, when filmmaking was not assuming that we are all morons that need everything spelled out, kubric (i think it's a kubric movie) masterfully (haha, what a back-of-the-movie-box word! almost as good as when beaver said today, of a movie "scantily-clad women...hey, i just said scantily clad. huh.") gets the subtleties of humbert humbert's lust without having to show a little tit in the camera, followed by some dumb quip about having seen a tit.

and that would be 11. of course, these aren't my favorites, per se, but rather 10 movies that i have thoroughly appreciated for vastly different reasons (i'd have to worry for myself if they weren't) and would recommend to the would-be movierenter.

okay... ask the people for ten... and they give ya a bazillion.. here goes... and of course, in no particular order... (why do I still feel like I'm forgetting something? :)

  1. The Sound of Music - I know it's the movie most associated with goody goody behavior... but the cinematography is excellent, dahlinks.. PLUS.. swoony Christopher Plummer AND Julie Andrews are in it!!! Also... it's got NUNS and NAZIS pitted against each other... plus... i really thought I was Gretl when I was kid.
  2. Moonstruck - yay! He's got HIS hand! He's got HIS bride! The music of Puccini mixed with the quirky dialogue gets me every time. Although I could've done without Vincent Gardenia in a romantic type setting :( Thumbs up to Ms. Dukakis for the line "Old man, give those dogs one more bite of my food and I'll kick you till you're dead!"
  3. any William Holden movie ... preferably Picnic, but Stalag 17 is a great flick... and MUCH more easy to recommend than the sitcom Hogan's Heroes...
  4. can't decide between the John Hughes quadruple threat : 16 Candles/The Breakfast Club/Ferris Bueller's Day Off/Weird Science. All four have classic quotes and somewhat touching scenes (except the Ferrari bashing in FBDO) and pretty good soundtracks as well :)
  5. The Women - classic movie... hilarity ensues! and.. um.. no men are in the movie!
  6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - okay.. i just saw this again recently and it was great :) The songs COULDA been a little better, but the kids get what they deserve! MMMWAAAAHHH.. Love the acid boat trip. Love Gene Wilder's performance... but the four grandparents in the same bed kinda ooks me out :P
  7. Radio Days - when I first saw it, I thought it was a cheap version of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, but ... well, maybe they just had similar youthful experiences. It is a wonderful film with a great cast and great music.
  8. Young Frankenstein, History of the World Pt. 1 and Silent Movie - Mel Brooks is (not is) a genius!
  9. Tootsie - this movie is worth the dollar rental just for the "live" soap opera footage and the reactions of those watching at home.
  10. On The Town - although Wizard of Oz has the Pink Floyd soundtrack, On The Town has Gene AND Frank AND Miss Turnstiles! It's a laff riot! Great musical and dance numbers... funny as hell.

Guess one consequence of being part of the second wave is feeling unoriginal. BUT. . .here goes anyway:

  1. Wings of Desire (If only I'd known angels were as cool as Peter Falk and Bruno Ganz, maybe I'da been more religious)
  2. Blue Angel - worth it for seedy 30's Berlin ambiance, the wonderful exchange (begging) "Call me!" (withering stare) "Call you what?", and the exhausted arrogance of "Falling in Love Again"
  3. Blood Simple - first iteration of Fargo, complete with Frances McDermond. Emmett Walsh got either an Oscar or nomination for his performance (don't have my books unpacked. . .YET. So I can't check)
  4. Philadelphia Story/High Society - story with variations AND young Celeste Holms
  5. Exterminating Angel - if yer into allegories. . .
  6. A Fish Called (Named?) Wanda - but then I like Kevin Kline
  7. Night of the Hunter - ditto for Robert Mitchum, who once opined he had "a face like a ferret" (and yes, I would have included this film even if he hadn't died today)
  8. A Place in the Sun - Monty! Liz! And, again, Shelley Winters, awfully good as the wronged whiney girl-he-dumped.
  9. East of Eden (lol, first typed "Easst"--snake musta got in there for a sec :-)
  10. Dial M for Murder
