The Pillar of Signatude at Powell’s Books, which has a layer of plexiglass over it lest someone deface it, includes two signatures of writers without whose work I would be an entirely different human being. Thank you, William Gibson and Douglas Adams (RIP) for documenting what is absurd, essential, and eternal about the world. Plus rayguns and robots.

That’s Peyton behind me. She and her friend Margaret wanted someone “who knows what they’re doing in the water” to be with them so they could swim out to the end of Crystal Pier (872 feet long). I followed along. They swam great. I told them so. Last year I had a surfer tell me he thought I was a sea lion. Today I was an emotional support dog. But truly? The lifeguards were on duty. I will write more about this and my other water adventures soon.
