The prompt at Quick Draw! was for the first cartooning inspiration and @laloalcaraz1 drew his cousin Cesar! ❤️ 🖊#sdcc#sdcc2022

One of my favorite ways to start a Comic-Con Saturday is with a visit to The Cat Cafe in the Gaslamp. Terrific recharge. Reservations required during Con but they’re open all year.

Swimming with a wristband where usually I have a cheap waterproof watch means sometimes I look at this COVID verification band to look for what time it is. It doesn’t locate the time of day but it certainly locates me in the historical moment.
It’s not Comic-Con unless I get a photo with a robot or two. Thanks random stranger!#SDCC#GUNDAM#CapricornOne

Yesterday I tried a new thread. I’m still sewing up a storm, prepping for Comic-Con. This thread was heavier. I could not machine sew more than a quarter inch before my machine jammed. I’m sewing a fabric covered in fur, complicating my expectations for how it should all work. I fought with it for 3 hours, with partial successes. I switched to another thread with easier going. A professor back in college said “learning is pain” which I hated at the time. Still do. Nonetheless, it’s true. There’s no learning without the endurance of discomfort and frustration and pain. Practice.

I don’t recognize myself in this but I’ll adjust. Body image is far more complicated than seems possible.

My latest comic page was one of the many pieces in @raquellejacs’ The Apartment Art Show. I feel honored to be part of such a vibrant and fun show. Such great energy. It’s a tall piece, so I’ve reformatted it for Instagram. It’s called “spite swimming | sanity swimming.” More autobiographical comics are coming.

Hey! Shark sighting north of Scripps pier. I stayed to the south. This current swell is excellent. I was in two legitimate tubes for a second or two. And then I was promptly tumbled like a sock in the spin cycle. Also spotted two dolphins. And a sea lion to boot. What a great, perfect morning. Tonight: downtown art show I have a piece in. Subject matter? Swimming.

The sunset was invisible due to cloud cover. Waves glassy and great. Have a great night!
Most of the fun of tonight’s short session was watching a gaggle of Brazilians absolutely ripping on nothingburger waves. Surfing is joy. Also I found a shovel.

My first sewing project. Successfully affixed this patch to a tote bag. Practice for some other sewing I want to do for cosplay. I immediately wept because I can’t share this information with my late grandma Jean Crawford. She was the first person who I ever saw sew. I remember going with her to fabric stores when I was 5. I remember driving her to them as a teenager.

Kelly is not feeling well this weekend so I’ve not seen her too much this weekend (we saw a Shakespeare play, masked; and I saw her for a second yesterday)—this photo is from the July 4th weekend north of Scripps Pier.
