Nobody is more shocked than me that I use algebra in programming lately.

Any day or sequence of days is a good time to remember to pace yourself. Independence Day may be the best day of the year to rediscover Frederick Douglass. He knew as many of us do how the United States’ promises exceed our deeds by a country mile. And as they might have said in 1861 or so—“PRESERVE THE UNION / CRUSH THE INSURRECTIONISTS”

The parking lot at La Jolla Shores filled by 745am. Kelly and I got the last spot I think. Folks galore making their encampments in one of San Diego’s finest parks. In the water everyone was doing everything you can do to enjoy the water. And I mean everything. Surfers surfing on shortboards and fish; foam and fiberglass. Stand-up paddleboarders. Bodyboarders ages 5 to 65 were enjoying the waves. Scuba divers in heavy gear made their way in and out from their dives. Kayakers making their circuit to the caves to the south. Long distance swimmers in bright caps and with trailing safety floats doing even longer distance from along the Shores to the Cove. Waders playing in waves; kids and parents assembling sand castles. And me with my handplane and fins and Kelly on a boogie board. I did not lose sight of how extraordinary it is that I can come play in this wilderness. And it is the wilderness: a few weeks ago a young man was lost helping friends out of a rip current in Mission Beach. The fun must be tempered by vigilance and the water demands respect. A beautiful and sublime morning.#lajolla#stoke#sandiego

While I was looking at this with my own eyes I thought it looked fake. The liminal space between cloudy overcast and clear and sunny.

My sister refers to me a “scavenger” because when I find things on the beach, on the street, in a dumpster, wherever, I tend to consider keeping them. Plastic toys, a heavy ceramic parrot, an Arabian airlines pencil case, beach toys, whatever. One way I know I am dating the right woman because she found this on the beach late one night and gave it to me for my collection. Thank you @hellokellykuhl!

a bit tired. small waves with long waits between sets. mini slash from a stingray to my right ankle. no venom I don’t think. pancakes surely will help me heal. the world is a mess but I am lucky.

I like this photo because it’s like “Where’s Gwen?”—missing is a little red and white striped outfit—it was foolhardy to take dogs to Escondido in the heat of the day but it was a fun adventure and we were all exhausted after.

A dogsitting overnight started with a very nice beach walk. Daisy and Gwen may be two of the most different dogs ever.

I started cramping after 15 minutes. Post vaccine fatigue I think. It’s weird to understand my body. Finished after half an hour and one last long ride.
