Swimming with a wristband where usually I have a cheap waterproof watch means sometimes I look at this COVID verification band to look for what time it is. It doesn’t locate the time of day but it certainly locates me in the historical moment.

Yesterday I tried a new thread. I’m still sewing up a storm, prepping for Comic-Con. This thread was heavier. I could not machine sew more than a quarter inch before my machine jammed. I’m sewing a fabric covered in fur, complicating my expectations for how it should all work. I fought with it for 3 hours, with partial successes. I switched to another thread with easier going. A professor back in college said “learning is pain” which I hated at the time. Still do. Nonetheless, it’s true. There’s no learning without the endurance of discomfort and frustration and pain. Practice.

This morning I connected to my cross country flight to Virginia via LAX. I saw the dawn. I saw places that mean a lot to me. There’s my apartment! On the hill behind it was where my high school once stood, now replaced by condos. There’s Mission Bay where I’ve swum and kayaked and not-successfully windsurfed and jet ski’d. Beyond: Navy housing we lived in when I was a teenager. Had I been on the left side of the plane I’d have seen my favorite spot: Mission Beach Jetty. But take a beat on my right is former favorite swim spot La Jolla Cove. Shores. Del Mar. Solana Beach where I worked at failed dot com EduPoint. Orange County. Los Angeles County. Beaches, apartments; jobs and job interviews; car accidents, fights, train rides, romance and catastrophe. Southern California is my home; imbued with meaning. Onward.

I started blogging in late February 2001. Each line here represents a year of blogging, a line based on the count of posts per day with a bit of added noise added for aesthetic effect. I am fascinated by visualizations of data, and it was fun to toy with the aggregate counts of thousands of blog posts over time and see an image develop. It’s not what I expected it to look like as I exported data from my WordPress instance, but it definitely catches my eye. Inspired by Peter Saville’s iconic album cover for Joy Division’s album Unknown Pleasures. That artwork was based on data from a pulsar.
New Bot Day! R6-W1CH joins me on vacation in Chicago! She’s a Star Wars astromech droid exclusive from Disney (2021)—she assists a coven of witches, thus the hat! She’s joined by some newly acquired Windy City denizens. Happy Halloween!

What does one do with the shells and toys and a candle (?!) one finds on San Diego beaches? If you’re me, you modge-podge them to a canvas and then do multiple layers of beach sand, adhesive, and gloss varnish. It’s not much of a painting but I have the beach on the wall. And I love the beach.#beachtober#sandiegoart
