Two Ships

Two ships
  that pass in the night

A terrible metaphor!
  ...I always thought.

But now I know,
  how lonely the night is;

But now I know,
  how vast the ocean is;

And in the passing I see...
  how rare you are.

In the passing...
  charm and joy.

In the passing...
  longing and despair.
Two ships
  pass in the night

And now I know...
  what the terrible metaphor means.

And I was right:
  It is terrible.

And I was wrong:
  It is wonderful.
