ArtLung Prior Projects
I have, in the past, worked on lots of interesting odd stuff. Go to the newer stuff.
WebSanDiego & Mailing Lists
When I started making web pages the way to learn was to read usenet newsgroups or mailing lists. WebMonster, Wired, WWWAC, Web405, GOODTIMES, webdesign-L, Evolt connected people who made web pages. I got great opportunities. I spoke at C|Net Live in 1999. I was involved with The Web Standards Project at its start.
I learned to organize and co-organize events. I learned that community is everyone together enjoying drinks, but it's also the prep before, and the clean-up after.
In 1999, I said this at a coffee shop WebSanDiego Happy Hour:
WebSanDiego dot org is an idea — without interesting people and their ideas, there is no list. What’s more, it’s not any one thing – it’s not just a way to find a job – not just a place to get technical fixes — not just a place for news – not just a place for sales leads. It is all these things at once. But above all, it should be a human space for people to teach, talk and live, and learn. That’s pretty grandiose, I know – and I sometimes forget that this is “just a mailing list” — because I’m very passionate about this idea of community.
BarCamps
I still love the idea of an unconference. A group of people get together and self-organize to learn and share. It's a very special sort of collective action that earned me friends I have still.
I remain involved with the IndieWeb because it carries on that community spirit in service of personal publishing, a social web, and self-expression. Here are a few camps I've been a part of.
- IndieWeb Camp San Diego 2023, 2024
- XOXO Portland 2019, 2024
- UXCampDC 2011, 2020
- BeCamp 2010 Charlottesville Virginia
- BarCampLA7 Los Angeles 2009
- BarCampLA6 Los Angeles 2008
- DrupalCamp '08 Los Angeles
- BarCampLA5 Los Angeles 2007
- BarCampLA4 Los Angeles 2006
San Diego Bloggers, San Diego Blog
For a brief moment I was running a group blog and a blogging directory in San Diego. I sold San Diego Bloggers and San Diego Blog, domains and content when I moved to Los Angeles. They were important lessons.
Macromedia Flash
Flash pushed at what was possible on the web. Animation, games, and streaming video would not be where they are had Flash not existed. Read more about my Flash experience.
Respiratory Therapy
I was a respiratory therapist for less time than I've developed software. But I strongly internalized an ethos of healthcare. First, do no harm. Every human being deserves to be treated with dignity. Doesn't matter if they curse at you. Doesn't matter if they spit at you. Your role is to do what you can, tell the truth, and use your skills to heal. From the satirical novel The House of God, the third rule for caregivers is that at a cardiac arrest, the first procedure is to take your own pulse.
