Coloring Frank Miller

I love Batman.

I’ve been drawing Batman so long I can’t remember when I would have started. I have always drawn Batman.

Here’s a drawing of Batman on a kite. 1978 I think.

I shared my colors over Shawn Kerri back in 2022.

Today I share colors over one of my favorite artists: Frank Miller. I devoured his Dark Knight Returns as it came out. I was in a Driver’s Ed class in Clairemont around the corner from Comic Gallery. (See Remembering Comic Gallery)

I heard Frank Miller speak a few times at Comic-Cons over the years. Batman: Year One is as vital, if not more so, than DK Returns, though art is by David Mazzucchelli. I love Hard Boiled, The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. and the Martha Washington books, but those also don’t have his art in them. Ronin stands out. But really, it was the Lone Wolf & Cub covers he did in the 1980s might be the work that left the biggest impression on me. I loved the economy and expressiveness of line. I am less a fan of the Sin City books but that art is likewise gorgeous. The 300 lost me somewhat but I also read that work. Comics are words and pictures though, and when the words do less for me, it’s harder to re-read and recommend them.

It was fun to color over his work. I can look at it and say I’m pleased. If past patterns hold, though, when I look at this work in a few years its faults will stand out to me. For now I’m content.

Software used: Procreate.

If you enjoyed this, I suppose I can recommend you look at my “Batman” and “Drawings” tags.
