This mural by Alex “Ali” Gonzalez is one my Mom would have loved. Mom last lived in Los Angeles in 1977 but the whole of Los Angeles is imbued with her presence. Whether it was the time Chris and I drive to LA from San Diego and I got home at 3am on a school night and she was madder at me than I’d ever seen her or would ever see her be mad again. Or the times driving in the VW Beetle from Alhambra to LA County to pick up my Dad. Or being on Sunset Blvd within striking distance of my sister’s birthplace. And yesterday there was this, her favorite man singer for decades. And in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” yesterday there’s that moment where Eddie Valiant picks up a novelty sword to fight with and it’s the Singing Sword, useless save for the fact it’s a 1940s-style caricature of Frank Sinatra singing “Witchcraft.” My Mom died in 2010 but I carry her in my eyes and feelings and memories.

On Saturday visited the California campus of @bastyruniversity here in San Diego. They do naturopathic treatments of various kinds and had impressive array of natural ingredients in their kitchen. They had a broader range of health care modalities than I expected.

Work Walk / Scripps Summit
I started working in March of this year. It’s a startup. I like it. It’s on the rim of a big ol’ canyon. It’s harsh, but interesting.
When I first started there I walked around on that canyon edge a few times. One time I actually mapped my pathway, manually. That’s what this map is about.
There’s more to say about walks, and change, and what I’ve learned lately.
But not today.

Mysterious Galaxy Seeks New Ownership
I thought this email was interesting:
Mysterious Galaxy seeks new ownership!
For more than 25 years, Mysterious Galaxy has been an iconic fixture in the heart of San Diego, and your support has sustained one of the city’s most cherished independent bookstores. It’s time to pass the torch to a new owner, someone who can write the next chapter of Mysterious Galaxy’s story.
When we opened Mysterious Galaxy in 1993, we did so with the belief that it was essential to create a sustainable environment for years to come. Mysterious Galaxy and its immensely qualified and experienced booksellers are well-positioned to ensure that books and author events will remain a vital part of our community. The key ingredients that will contribute to the success of a new owner are all in place: a loyal customer base, a dedicated, hard-working staff, the technological tools to remain current and relevant, and a beautiful environment that appeals to customers of all ages. We are also here to provide the new owner with the necessary resources to ensure a smooth transition.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about Mysterious Galaxy, who genuinely loves our community, and who understands what it takes to operate a retail business. The conversation begins with you. We know how much you care about Mysterious Galaxy, and perhaps you or someone you know – even a family member ready for a change of pace – would enjoy being the owner of our genre fiction stalwart.
While we are currently seeking new ownership, we want our community to know that there is no threat of store closure. Indeed, we anticipate just the opposite: new growth, new business, and new opportunities within our industry.
If you would like to learn more about the opportunity to become Mysterious Galaxy San Diego’s new owner, please contact Terry Gilman at Terry [at] mystgalaxy.com.
Thank you so much for sharing the magic of books with us, and for your interest in seeing Mysterious Galaxy serve generations of readers for years to come.
Yours in good books and conversations,
Terry Gilman and Maryelizabeth YturraldeMysterious Galaxy has moved around several times in those years. I saw Neal Stephenson speak there. I saw Greg Proops speak there. I like that place, wherever the physical plant is. I read less than I did 20 years ago, but I like that it exists. It’s a San Diego institution, I tell ya! If only I had the money!

Posted September 13, 2018 to Facebook.
If you’re reading this you are a acquaintance, a friend, or family of Leah and Joe.
2018 was a year of great change for Joe and Leah. We explored where we were, and what we wanted in life with the help of some supportive family and friends. To make a long and private story short, the result of being able to seek our best lives, we have decided to no longer be married. For some of you, this is old news, for some, new news.Know this, you probably can’t find two prospectively-divorced people with higher esteem and greater love for each other. As of December we’ll have been married 14 years, and together 16 years. A fine run.
To those who have opened their hearts and been caring and supportive of this change – we thank you with all our heart.with Love,
Leah, Joe

Was looking at code. Just doing cleanup in archival directories on my website and in a file with a time stamp of August 22, 2001 — hidden in an HTML comment— here’s a copy and pasted email from my mom. I encoded an audio tape of the night before their wedding and asked how old everyone in the tape was. I sure miss you mom.
