Whoever put a Christmas tree on the berm at Mission Beach: I salute you! Merry Christmas!

This illustration by Shaun Kerri was reportedly published in CARtoons Magazine. When? Based on the Locals Only t-shirt, boom box, sunglasses and painter’s cap: early 1980s. That beach wall could only be Mission or Pacific Beach. Shaun Kerri was an incredible draughtsperson and cartoonist. Details on her retreat from art are spotty and mostly speculative. None of my business. This cartoon looks like the PB and MB of my teenage years. It’s unlike any drawing I would ever share: lascivious and debauched, yet brilliant. I’ve colored the image in Procreate as an exercise. I look forward to a day when I’ll be able to purchase a collection of reprints of Shaun Kerri’s work. What an artist! #ShaunKerri

This morning I connected to my cross country flight to Virginia via LAX. I saw the dawn. I saw places that mean a lot to me. There’s my apartment! On the hill behind it was where my high school once stood, now replaced by condos. There’s Mission Bay where I’ve swum and kayaked and not-successfully windsurfed and jet ski’d. Beyond: Navy housing we lived in when I was a teenager. Had I been on the left side of the plane I’d have seen my favorite spot: Mission Beach Jetty. But take a beat on my right is former favorite swim spot La Jolla Cove. Shores. Del Mar. Solana Beach where I worked at failed dot com EduPoint. Orange County. Los Angeles County. Beaches, apartments; jobs and job interviews; car accidents, fights, train rides, romance and catastrophe. Southern California is my home; imbued with meaning. Onward.

What kind of trap is this? It was washed up at Mission Beach. The red things are actual bricks. And in the middle were two bleached out pieces meat. It was washed up and had rope attached. So—what kind of trap is this?
