Left the screaming busy early afternoon shore break. Walking the six blocks to my car. I’m on the left side of the road; I notice a red Mini on the right side, tracking me. “I’m stalking you” exclaims the driver, a woman. “Okay” I reply, pointing an arc representing much further up the street. Another block. Then another. “Next block, left side of the street” I motion. “Maybe I’ll go up there” she says. “White Pilot” I reply. The Mini drives to my car and makes a u-turn. I unlock the car by remote. “No rush” says the red Mini, two older ladies I see now. Summer hats on. Older than me and I’m not young anymore. I stow my gear in the back. “No hurry” says Mini. “Change your clothes if you want”—then—“don’t get naked” the ladies cackle/giggle. I double take back the car, my hoodie on now. “I might be getting ogled” I say—then more giggling from the Mini. I close the Pilot’s hatch. I get in my car and drive off, a little wave out my window. I can feel the summer ending. A last blast of enthusiastic summer energy out at the beaches. The giddy death throes of Summer vacation for everyone.

I took it easy this week. Back to it hard today. A new prescription pill added to my morning routine added this week. So far so good. Age!

Who did you see riding waves without a surfboard north of Scripps Pier? Me or a sea lion.

Not every day two dolphins sprint in front of me. I think they were taking advantage of a rip current/eddy that might’ve had some good eats drawn into it. This was tonight at La Jolla Shores.

Swimming with a wristband where usually I have a cheap waterproof watch means sometimes I look at this COVID verification band to look for what time it is. It doesn’t locate the time of day but it certainly locates me in the historical moment.

Swimming this morning, pre Comic Con.

I don’t recognize myself in this but I’ll adjust. Body image is far more complicated than seems possible.

Just a few days to Comic-Con. Endless Summer.

Hey! Shark sighting north of Scripps pier. I stayed to the south. This current swell is excellent. I was in two legitimate tubes for a second or two. And then I was promptly tumbled like a sock in the spin cycle. Also spotted two dolphins. And a sea lion to boot. What a great, perfect morning. Tonight: downtown art show I have a piece in. Subject matter? Swimming.

The sunset was invisible due to cloud cover. Waves glassy and great. Have a great night!

Most of the fun of tonight’s short session was watching a gaggle of Brazilians absolutely ripping on nothingburger waves. Surfing is joy. Also I found a shovel.

Like Ma Bell I got the ill communication

Very rare to be at the beach at mid-morning. Summer in full swing.

Any day or sequence of days is a good time to remember to pace yourself. Independence Day may be the best day of the year to rediscover Frederick Douglass. He knew as many of us do how the United States’ promises exceed our deeds by a country mile. And as they might have said in 1861 or so—“PRESERVE THE UNION / CRUSH THE INSURRECTIONISTS”
